Keeping up with federal and state regulations can be exhausting for business owners and executives, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the 20+ states with increases to minimum wage at the beginning of 2021, there are several mid-year minimum wage rate hikes to be aware of.
Here's what you need to know.
Locally in the DMV, Virginia raised the minimum wage on May 1, 2021 to $9.50. Tipped wages remain unchanged at $2.13. On July 1, 2021, DC and Montgomery County, MD are raising the minimum wage. Montgomery County is raising the rate to $15 for employers with over 50 employees and $14 for employers with 50 or fewer employees. A small employer, defined as 10 or fewer employees, will move to $13.50. Tipped wages remain unchanged at $3.63. The District of Columbia is raising the minimum wage to $15.20 per hour and to $5.05 per hour for tipped employees.
Other states increasing minimum wage during 2021
On July 1, 2021, Nevada is raising the minimum wage to $8.75 for employees who are offered health insurance. Nevada employees who are not offered health insurance must receive $9.75 per hour. Also on July 1, Oregon is also raising the minimum wage $12.75.
Connecticut is raising the minimum wage rate to $13 on August 1, 2021. Florida is raising to $10 on September 1, 2021.
It’s important to note that statewide minimum wages apply in areas that are not governed by a higher, local minimum wage ordinance. For example, Montgomery County, MD has a local minimum wage rates that exceed the statewide minimum.
