2022 Minimum Wage Updates

Effective January 1, 2022, 20 states and many local jurisdictions increased their minimum wage and/or tipped minimum wage rates. Several other states have scheduled increases later this year or a second planned increase to their minimum wage rate.

Here's what you need to know.

Locally in the DMV, the Virginia minimum wage increased to $11.00 per hour on January 1, 2022. Tipped wages remain unchanged at $2.13 per hour.

Maryland minimum wage increased to $12.50 per hour for employers with 15 or more employees or $12.20 per hour for employers with 14 or fewer employees on January 1, 2022. Tipped wages remain unchanged at $3.63 per hour. It’s worth noting that Montgomery County has a higher minimum wage than the state and is raising minimum wage rates on July 1, 2022 based on employer size. Howard County will also raise their minimum wage rates based on employer size on April 1, 2022.

DC minimum wage rates remain unchanged for now at $15.20 per hour and $5.05 per hour for tipped wages. On July 1, 2022, DC will increase the minimum wage to $16.10 per hour and $5.35 for tipped employees.
