Keeping up with federal and state regulations can be exhausting for business owners and executives. In addition to the 20 states with increases to minimum wage at the beginning of the year, there are several mid-year minimum wage rate hikes to be aware of.
Locally in the DMV, The District is raising the minimum wage on July 1, 2022 to from $15.20 to $16.10 per hour. The base minimum wage for tipped employees will increase from $5.05 per hour to $5.35.
Montgomery County, Maryland is raising the rate on July 1, 2022 to $15.65 for employers with over 50 employees and $14.50 for employers with 11-50 employees. A small employer, defined as 10 or fewer employees, will move to $14.00. The base minimum wage for tipped employees is $4.00 per hour.
Howard County, Maryland raised the rate on April 1, 2022 to $14.00 for large employers and $12.50 for small employers. A small employer is defined as an employer with less than 15 employees, an organization with tax exempt status, and certain home health or food services businesses. The base minimum wage for tipped employees is $3.63 per hour.
Other minimum wage increases in 2022
On July 1st, Nevada is raising the minimum wage to $9.50 for employees who are offered health insurance. Nevada employees who are not offered health insurance must receive $10.50 per hour.
Also on July 1st, Oregon is moving to $12.50 for non-urban counties, $13.50 for urban counties and $14 in Portland Metro. Connecticut is moving to $14 per hour.
Florida is moving to $11 per hour on September 30, 2022. It’s important to note that statewide minimum wages do not apply in areas that are governed by a higher, local minimum wage. There are several local wage increases taking effect on July 1st in California, Illinois, and Minnesota.
